Transnet is offering an exciting opportunity for young, ambitious individuals to join the organisation as Apprentice Boilermakers within the Transnet Corporate Centre in Durban. This apprenticeship is designed to equip learners with the essential technical skills, practical experience, and industry knowledge required to become fully competent artisans. The position forms part of the Learning & Performance Integration department, under the guidance of the Senior Specialist for Learning & Performance. As a trainee in this structured apprenticeship, successful candidates will benefit from hands-on training, theoretical learning, and exposure to real industrial environments. The apprenticeship is graded at level APP and is open to applicants between 18 and 35 years old.
Purpose of the Apprenticeship
The primary aim of this opportunity is to prepare apprentices to work confidently, independently, and productively as qualified Boilermaker artisans. Throughout the programme, apprentices will be trained to understand the processes, tools, and techniques required to operate safely and effectively in a technical engineering environment.
The training will cover a wide range of core functions, including:
- Planning and preparing work areas
- Understanding and selecting appropriate tools, materials, and equipment
- Fabricating, manufacturing, and assembling metal structures
- Inspecting, maintaining, and repairing components
- Interpreting drawings and measurements accurately
- Applying theoretical knowledge to real-world engineering tasks
This blend of practical and theoretical instruction builds a strong foundation that enables apprentices to perform at a high standard once qualified.
Position Outputs and Core Responsibilities
By the end of the apprenticeship, participants are expected to demonstrate competency in the following areas:
- Planning and Preparation: Setting up work sites, arranging tools and materials, and ensuring full readiness for technical tasks.
- Tool Usage: Safely using hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments essential in metal fabrication and assembly.
- Installation and Assembly: Fitting, connecting, and assembling parts, components, and structures according to engineering specifications.
- Testing and Inspection: Examining completed work, carrying out safety checks, and performing commissioning activities.
- Maintenance and Repairs: Diagnosing faults, conducting repairs, and restoring equipment or structures to full functionality.
Although this is a Boilermaker apprenticeship, exposure to electrical control systems is also part of the broader training, making it a comprehensive technical experience.
